How To Convert Windows 8 PC To WiFi Router

If you are running on Windows 8, then you have this incredible feature to convert PC into WiFi Router. Yes, it means that you can start sharing your Internet with other WiFi devices without any external WiFi router. Sounds cool?

All you need is a Hosted network supported wireless network card, and you are good to share Internet on Windows 8 without WiFi router. Below is the detailed instruction set to convert PC to WiFi router on Windows 8.

First and most important thing before starting is to identify whether your computer’s wireless network card supports this entire process or not. For that, open Command Prompt as admin and hit the below command:

netsh wlan show drivers

It would list out an output, there at the ending, you have to look for the argument, Hosted Network Supported marked as Yes. If its YES, then you are good to go ahead and if its NO, then either try upgrading your drivers or hardware.

Convert PC Into WiFi Router

To start with, you need to create a connection. You can either do that using a third part tool or by using command prompt. Below is the command to get it created on Command Prompt:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Dwarka’s  key=abc123$$$

Here, ssid would name your WiFi connection and key would be the password. Once you hit the above command on Command Prompt as Admin, you would get the below output.

Convert PC Into WiFi Router

Next you need to do is, start the above created WiFi connection. This can be done by the below command:

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Once its fired, you would get a message on command prompt that, The hosted network started.

How To Convert Windows 8 PC To WiFi Router

Now right click on the left bottom corner of the screen and click on Network Connections. Now in the opened window, you will find a WiFi connection that you have created above. Right click on that, and click on Properties.

Click on Sharing tab and put a check across the option, Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection. Check out for other options that you wish to set and that is it.
