Today in this world of computers, the abacus may seem old fashioned and a play toy. However, it should be remembered that it is because of the abacus that today’s handhelds , desktops and supercomputers have become possible.
The abacus is as old as humanity itself. Archeologists believe that the abacus was invented in China more than 5000 years ago. Even today, the abacus is widely in use in China, Japan and Korea. However, not all agree with this. Romans, Egyptians, Indians and meso-Americans-all have used the abacus for coucting and accounting.
Today, the abacus has become obsolete and has been taken over by handheld calculators. Though no longer in use, its use is still empahsised in many schools to improve thinking skills and reasoning in young children.
On the Internet, there are comparitively very few resources on the abacus. http://www.abacushome.info/ is one of them. It provides information on the abacus, its history and how to perform mathematical operations using it.
