How to Schedule Disk Defragmentation in Windows Vista

At a particular point of time, the files in your system tend to get scattered on the disk, thus increasing the execution time of the respective program. The disk defragmentation utility in Windows can thus scan for and rearrange these scattered files on your hard drive.

Usually defragmentation is required once every week. But at times it may not be possible to remember performing a scan especially if you’re on a tight schedule. You can thus schedule the defragmentation utility to run as and when required.

  • Click "Start > Control Panel" or simply type "defrag" in the "Search" box.
  • The "Disk Defragmenter" window appears.
  • By default, the "Run on a schedule" check box will be selected.
  • Click the "Select volumes" button.
  • Select the drives to be defragged in the resulting window.
  • Select an appropriate week, day and time from the respective drop-down lists.
  • Once done, click "OK".
