Your notebook plays MP3s and music CDs correctly and at full volume. But for videos and DVDs, the volume seems to be a little lower than usual. This unsatisfactory and frustrating situation is caused by a faulty AC3 driver implementation. The fact that the audio is even audible means that the AC3 driver is working somewhat, but apparently a setting for the downmix to stereo output on the notebook is not configured correctly.

What can help you is a small tool called AC3Filter. It allows media players to playback movies with AC3 and DTS audio tracks. It is possible to upmix any audio source to 6 channels. Filter can do multi-channel and digital (SPDIF) output. It can encode any audio source to AC3 on-the-fly and send it over SPDIF to the receiver.

Usually, just installing it should do the trick, but if the sound is still not clearly audible after that, go to the sound settings in the Control Panel and select the setting ‘2/0-stereo’ and under ‘Preset’, select ‘Loud’. After restarting your computer, the playback of AC3 DVD audio will work perfectly.

You often need to print documents to proofread them. Depending on the application, you print some documents in black and white to save ink and some in color or at higher resolutions. However, resetting the printer driver every time is quite a task. Here is a procedure to call up or access different print settings easily. To do this,

Open ‘Start > Control Panel’. In Windows XP , click ‘Printers and other hardware’ and ‘Printers and faxes’. If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7 , select ‘Hardware and Sound’ and ‘Printers’. In the classic view of the Control Panel, you can open this dialog by double clicking ‘Printers and Faxes’ or ‘Printers’. Right-click on the printer’s icon and select ‘Rename’ in the context menu.

After the name of the printer type a small indication about the setting, e.g. ‘Standard’ or ‘Color’. Changing the name is important because you have to diferentiate between different printer installations in the ‘Print’ dialog.Then double click ‘Add printer’ and install the same printer once again. Add another hint for the default settings.

After the printer has been installed twice, right-click both printer icons and select ‘Print Settings’ in each. In the following dialogs, enter the desired properties such as monochrome printing, and confirm with ‘OK’. In the future, both printer configurations appear in the ‘Print’ dialog as two separate choices, which can be selected quickly.

It’s easy to ensure that scripts are run each time Windows logs on or off. You can schedule important procedures such as updates, backups, and can even run maintenance tasks on startup or shutdown. This is useful to speed up your computer and also to keep your windows system clean. The tool you need to use is the Group Policy editor of the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

In Windows XP, start the Group Policy editor by clicking ‘Start > Run’ and entering ‘gpedit.msc’. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 you can directly enter the command ‘gpedit.msc’ in the search bar of the start menu. For that however, you must have administrator rights to the computer.

To run a script when a user is logging on or of, Select ‘Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts (logon / logoff)’ in the tree structure in the left pane of the Group Policy Editor.

In the right pane, you will see icons for ‘Logon’ and ‘Logoff’. If you wish to run your own script when a user is logging of, double-click ‘Logoff’, or double-click ‘Logon’ to run a script at startup.

The following steps are the same in both cases.

In the following dialog, click ‘Show Files’. Windows Explorer then shows a folder into which you can copy and paste the scripts to be run.
Scripts that are supposed to be run by the operating system when a user logs off are in the folder System32\GroupPolicy\User\Scripts\Logoff and logs on in System32\GroupPolicy\User\Scripts\Logon folder.

As soon as the scripts are in the respective folders, click ‘Add’. Then select the script file using ‘Browse’. In ‘Script parameter’, enter any parameters that are required. Confirm with ‘OK’. The selected script now appears in the list in the ‘Logoff properties’ or ‘Logon properties’ dialog box.
To run more than one script, add all other needed files to the list one after the other using ‘Add’. With ‘Edit’, you can change an already listed script or delete files from the list using ‘Remove’.
The sequence each one is executed in can be adjusted ‘Upwards’ or ‘Downwards’. Then click ‘OK’ and close the Group Policy Editor.

Windows now automatically runs the specified scripts while logging on or logging of. Contrary to the ‘Auto start’ folder that exists separately for every user account, the changes described here affect all users. Therefore, makes sure while programming the scripts that they are to be run for every user.
